LO1: Analysis of Scripts

For this tasks I am going to be analysing and comparing the following scripts:

Short film- My Mother Dreams The Satan's Disciples In New York

Game play Dennis Mcquail 1972- escapism

Style and Content

Screenplays are always written in the font style Courier New, font size 12, as it is easy to read. They also use this font size as it suits the industry standards. Screen plays such as "My Mother Dreams The Satan's Disciples In New York"and "" have a character description. The reason they have this is for the actor/actress to understand the role they are taken on, and to develop into the character. A computer game script is different to other types of scripts as it includes a flowchart. They include a flowchart as the gameplay can always change depending how the game player chooses to play the games. This is a useful technique as it allows the user to have the ability to adapt the game to their choice, giving them escapism (Dennis Mcquail 1972). Game scripts also include a synopsis, which a brief narrative. This can be a form of advertisement as it allows the audience to understand the gameplay.

Most of time dialogue is justified to the middle of the script for the characters/presenters. They place it here as it is easier for the characters/presenters to find out where there dialogue is. The characters name/presenter is always in Capital letters to show who is speaking. Other scripts such as TV and Theatre include stage directions and stage descriptions, this is used to help set the diegesis of the narrative/story. It also gives the actors a better understanding of what is happening in the particular scene and body language and facial expression needed. A video game will always include a synopsis as this gives a brief narrative to the whole concept and gameplay of the game. It is also used for a type of advertisement method, buyers will be intrigued by the synopsis as it gives them a understanding of what genres the game will contain.

Film scripts, screen plays will include stage directions and locations as they are creating the narrative to the play. The stage directions are instruction for the actors to portray their characters in a way the director wants them to. Here is an example of a stage direction...

The man has been asked to be abrupt in his speech. This is placed in the middle of the script when dialogue starts as it is easier for the reader to see there lines.

From the example we can see that stage directions are important as it creates the character in more depth! Sound effect s will be present on scripts such as  screen plays, video games and more. Sound is presented in the stage direction as the sound is something that will occur when been directed to. Mode of address is the language used in scripts, the way it is used to create effects; such as peer to peer, teacher to student and parent to child. Most scripts will use the mode of address peer to peer and teacher to student (especially radio  or TV news as they are informing us of News nationally and internationally). Peer to peer is more casually and can be colloquial. In a short film script mode of address can change due to what the story is about.

TV news/ radio scripts have a narrative structure. Hard hitting news (Breaking news) is always read out first, as this is most important. They will always included the WWW as this is informative and is what the public want to know.

They also included facts.

Narrative Structure

Scripts can be written in many different formats and structure. Video game which is based on a character (usually you) is a single standard narrative. Harry potter is a single standard    as it is more or less about Harry the protagonist; however Harry potter in ways links to multi standard narratives, as we learn stories about other main characters in the film. The reason why scripts can be single standard narrative is because it creates a focus on one main character- seeing things from their perceptive. A multi standard narrative is where the narrative multiples to many different characters, so there is a band of protagonsit. Soap shows such as Eastenders and Coronation street used this narrative structure as they are aired for a long period of time, meaning they need more stories about characters to create spectacle. This gains a wider audience as there is a range of stories happening in each episode. Another narrative structure is a Liner narrative, which is where a story goes in chronological order. Tadorov used a theory of how the chronolgical order of a film should go, equilibrium, disequilibrium and the revoultion. An example of a film that uses this tecnhique is Breakfast at Tiffanys, the effect of using a linear narrative structure is that it is easier for the audience to undertsand the film. For a game script they use a prologue for their order, and then the game player will follow the narrative by the game play- this makes the game more easier to undertsand. Most films follow a linear narrative structure; however some films follow a non linear narrative structure, for example pulp fiction. The films jumps about in time frequently, which gives the effect of being interesting and keeps the audience egeagded. It is also spectacle. Another type of narrative structure is what TV news uses, which is the running order of their stories. Hard hitting news (Breaking) is always first as this is highly important to the audience. WWW is always included as information is factual in new reports. It will then show soft hitting news, which can be good news.

Genre
Barry Keith Grant 1995 definded genre as a type or kind. New is real life events that happen internationally and nationally and is used to inform the puplic of breaking events happening. Film scripts usually are hybrid as many film narrtives these day used different genres as it makes the film more enegaging and speactacle. An example of a film that uses a hybrid of genre is Cabin in the Woods, as this includes horror but as well as the element of comedy, creating spectacle. Video games also include genres, as the genres appeal to different types of target audiences. For example Call of Duty is a horror/action and stereotypically suits a male audience, as it includes horrif content. A fictional script such as Suicide Squad is usually inspired by books or comic, as this gives the audience the feel of espacsim as it wouldnt happen in real life. Non ficitonal scripts can be documentries, such as David Attenborugh documentries on wildlife, as this is all real. This is effective as it informative about real life.

Target Audience

Dennis Mcquall 1972 demographically catogrised people into groups of their life style. Block buster films suh as Avengers and Harry potter would demographically suit a target audience of ABC1, as the whole production overall is suitable to their spending power. Age is a huge part of the audience, films such as Harry Potter have a wide range of audience such as 12-30 as it is such a successful film internationally and is suitable for all agers, where as Lady and the Tramp is suitable for a younger audience due to its content. As well Lady and the Tramp would appeal to a female audience due to the genre of film, romance. Depending on the content and the language/gestures includes on a script age can vary. TV news is influenced by geographic as they air local news depending on what city people live in, as well there are different types of new such as CBBC news, which is aimed towards children as BBC News may upset them due to their age and understandings. Audience can also depend on the talking point, for TV news this can be niche and mass national as worldwide news is aired on TV, but local news is also used which is aimed towards a niche audience.
